English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
A four-level academic English program for international learners preparing for college, university, transfer, graduate, or other post-secondary studies in Canada.
The WELS EAP program develops the academic language and study skills students need to communicate, study, and perform successfully in real academic environments.
Program Focus
Academic English for post-secondary readiness
Academic listening
Understanding lectures, identifying key ideas, and taking effective notes.
Seminar speaking
Academic discussion, expressing and supporting opinions, group participation, and responding to questions.
Academic reading
Reading academic texts, identifying arguments, interpreting information, and developing analytical comprehension.
Academic writing
Structured paragraphs, essays, reports, and other academic assignments.
Presentation skills
Organization, vocabulary development, and audience awareness.
University readiness
Language habits and study skills for a successful transition to post-secondary learning.
Program Structure
Four progressive EAP levels
Students are placed at the level that best matches their current English proficiency. Each level is approximately eight weeks and includes 240 instructional hours.
Entry guide: IELTS-equivalent 3.5
Placement may also be determined through the WELS placement assessment.

2026–2027 Program Dates
September 3, 2026 – June 20, 2027
The 2026–2027 WELS EAP program runs from September 3, 2026 to June 20, 2027. Students completing all four levels consecutively complete approximately eight months of instruction within the program calendar.
Admission & Placement
How placement works
- Applicants provide relevant academic transcripts and supporting records.
- Applicants may submit IELTS, TOEFL, or other accepted English-language results for placement.
- Applicants without accepted English test results may complete a WELS placement assessment.
- The WELS placement assessment covers grammar, reading, writing, and speaking.
- Final placement is determined by WELS based on English proficiency and any applicable pathway or admission conditions.

Program goal
The goal is to strengthen academic listening, speaking, reading, and writing so students are better prepared to analyze information, communicate ideas, and complete post-secondary academic tasks.
2026 Fees
Tuition & mandatory non-tuition fees
Fees, tuition payment & refunds
WELS provides students with its current tuition-payment and refund information before enrolment and payment. Refund eligibility is governed by the written WELS Tuition Fee & Refund Policy and depends on the applicable circumstances and timing. Students should review the current policy before making payment and contact WELS with any questions.
Mandatory Medical Insurance Policy
Medical insurance is mandatory for all EAP students
All WELS EAP students are required to have valid medical insurance while studying in Canada. Insurance must be in place before arrival in Canada and must remain active throughout the student's period of study.
- Medical insurance is mandatory for the full period of study in Canada.
- Students must provide evidence of valid medical insurance when requested by WELS.
- Coverage must remain active throughout enrolment and the student's stay in Canada.
- Students are responsible for understanding the terms, exclusions, claim procedures, and limits of their coverage.
- If coverage expires or is cancelled, the student must arrange replacement coverage immediately and notify WELS.
Students must complete medical-insurance arrangements before arrival in Canada. WELS may request confirmation of coverage as part of the admission, arrival, or orientation process.

Homestay
Homestay placement & support
WELS provides homestay placement and support. Host families are selected by the school and are expected to meet WELS host requirements.
Students using homestay services receive support from WELS with placement and coordination. Homestay is presented as a service available to EAP students and is not described here as mandatory for every student.
Dispute Resolution
Student complaint procedures
WELS maintains student complaint and dispute-resolution procedures for EAP students. Students may seek support from WELS when concerns arise and should follow the school's current written complaint procedure for informal or formal resolution.
